Vivid and gorgeous. This volume covers several distinct stages of Imriel's life, and yet it weaves into a beautiful whole. A major plot point in this one was spoiled for me before reading which diminished the impact of certain events--I'd recommend trusting to Carey's brilliant writing and reading it without reading a summary (but read Kushiel's Scion first!)

Loved it, like I've loved the whole series thus far!

The narrator's character development continues to be at the heart of the novel - a hallmark of the whole series that lifts it above the formulaic swamp of the fantasy genre.

unbelievable! Normally long series of books (this is part 5) get worse, this one however becomes better and better. I found it a very beautiful story and was moved several times by the emotions of the main character, Imriel

Not as good as the other Kushiel books. The story lagged in a lot of places and I found myself skipping ahead. Good story, just should cut out some of the other stuff.

Imriel has grown up and made the decision to forego his love in order to fulfill the wishes of his cousin Ysandre, Queen of Terre d'Ange, and wed Durstan's niece Dorelei who will produce the heir of Talorcon in Alba. The land does not welcome him and his love haunts him. He allows himself to be bound with spells to forget his love and be able to make a life with his wife. It works for a time and he is able to find a happiness of sorts with her and their child-to-be. Then the land truly rejects him as his gods are upset with him for abandoning their basic precept and all that is left is Kushiel's Justice.

A good installment. Again, some of the journey stuff was a bit long. I understand that she doesn't want the journey's to look too easy and she wanted him to be humble at the end but at the same time, some of the details just dragged it on unnecessarily. I find this to be pretty true with her books. It's funny, they are books in which the basic precept is to love as thou wilt but those scenes take up a lot less space than journeys but a whole lot. I still enjoy them but wish at times that they would speed things up a bit.

Better than Kushiel's Scion, still not as good as the first trilogy.

Of all of the series (Dart, Chosen, Avatar, Scion, Justice...) I have to say that this one has been the hardest to get through. Granted Dart took me a while to get used to Jaqueline Carey's style of writing, and learning all of the new characters. I understand that this is the step up to the final Imriel/Phedre novel. But it's been a task to get through. Maybe I've just been pampered by previous books that have a plot twist every couple chapters. This one has just seemed to lag a bit, but I can't wait to finish it, so that I can read the last one. (Which I hear is AMAZING!)

I'm wowed once again by Carey. She takes a very simple idea - to love, and love freely - an explores the depths of its meaning again and again. Like her other books, I knew getting into that there would be some painful points (more like knife-to-the-belly-I-can't-believe-what-just-read-please-god-like-it-be-a-mistake moments), but it was ultimately worth it - like always.

The imriel series is shaping up nice, and is interwoven with Phaedra and Joscelin's lives enough that it feels like a continuation, instead of another series.

    It was an amazing read!
