“Read it four times, actually. Although rich and colorful in every sense imaginable, ILLYWHACKER's significance for Australian history surpasses its literary importance. ”Nikola Virak wrote this review Friday, November 16, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“Long winded, dragged on forever story about a 139 year old rake and his tedious life story.I never got to like Herbert. He crashes into Jack and Molly's lives (in Australia,1919) and perves on their fourteen year old daughter Phoebe. He eventually gets to marry Phoebe when Jack is killed by his snake.Phoebe has his children and gets old and he goes on to Leah.lather rinse repeat.Groan.600 pages and I was ready to scream in frustration. The spicy scenes did nothing for me and I just grew to hate Herbert more and more with every page.”Julie Booker wrote this review Tuesday, May 3, 2011. “Rambling stories from protagonist Herbert Badgery. Some of the ramblings were told in a way that you could see the decent man within Badgery, the man he wished he could be. There were enough of these tales to keep me reading although many of the tales were odd, unfathomable and full of inner wretchedness. The characters within the book, with the exception of a few, were self centered including Badgery.
I was not happy with the the conclusion of some of the characters nor the book itself.
This is a Booker prize novel, so someone found something redeeming within it's pages. I, however, did not. Guess it's just not my cup of tea!”
“I started reading it and thought I am going to like it. The first affair ended, and the book suddenly became a fat tome full of nonsense. Perhaps Peter Carey got carried away - it sure didn't seem the same novel by the time I reached the 300th page. Illywhacker scarcely remained that, and unappetizing vegemite jars and guanas colluded to spoil the party.”Madhuri wrote this review Thursday, March 3, 2011. “Gets inside the Australian 'identity' (mythical?) better than anything else I've read.”Tim L wrote this review Tuesday, April 14, 2009. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“An Australian epic. It is a long read and slow moving, but the depth of the writing keeps you drawn in”Cullum A wrote this review Monday, April 13, 2009. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
