Five hundred years in the future, Captain Mal Reynolds and his crew aboard the Serenity get more than they bargained for when they take on two passengers who are fugitives from an omnipotent consortium that dominates the galaxy.

  • Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds: Captain of Serenity, Reynolds is an Independent who volunteered and fought in the Unification War. He named the ship Serenity after the Battle of Serenity Valley.
  • River Tam: Add a description of this character.
  • The Operative: Hired by the Alliance to retrieve River Tam, he is a very smart and able man. He always attempts to use reason before violence. His signature attack is on a nerve cluster in the upper back, rendering the victim unable to move. He usually follows this by planting his sword in the ground and having the victim fall onto it.
  • Simon Tam: A trauma surgeon who sacrificed everything in order to protect his sister.
  • Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye: The ship's mechanic with a knowledge of machines.
  • Hoban "Wash" Washburne: Serenity's pilot and husband of Zoe, Wash is a whimsical character.
  • Jayne Cobb: A gun hand who is not as tough as he appears.
  • Mr. Universe: A man with access to every piece of information that exists in the 'Verse. He changed sensor readings so that all the inhabitants of some unspecified planet would evacuate, then came in and took the planet for himself. Married to a LoveBot.
  • Zoe Alleyne Washburne: First mate of Captain Reynolds. Fought in the war in the 57th Overlanders with Mal.
  • Inara Serra
  • Dr. Philbert Mathias: The doctor who worked with River at the Academy.
  • Mingo: Twin of Fanty
  • Shepherd Book: Not always a Shepard.
  • Fanty: Twin of Mingo
