This is a very complex, complicated story (depending upon the translated version you are reading - over 1000 pages)but well worth the effort. A true, and ancient classic (arguably the first "novel" -from 11th century Japan),riddled with courtly intrigues, politics, passion, intimacy, courtliness, and a relationship twist that you'll wonder about -- and all so formalized it almost hurts. You can visualize the sweeping kimonos, strain to hear the hushed sliding doors, smell the cherry...

The world's first novel, Lady Murasaki Shikibu writes about the grandeur of a life in the palace of Prince Genji. It's a bit dragging though, but since it's the first novel, you can't expect the book to be perfect. Still, it is worth having in your home library if you want to know more about the Japanese Imperial court life and of course, Japanese history,
