Description

Twelve-year-old Artemis is a millionaire, a genius, and above all, a criminal mastermind. But he doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories - they're armed and dangerous!

Summary

Artemis Fowl II, the titular character, is the twelve-year-old son of an Irish crime lord, Artemis Fowl I. Cast of Characters/Important People

  • Artemis Fowl: A mastermind, a twelve year-old genius. With the highest IQ in Ireland, nobody can beat him. But does he decide to join the FBI and fight notorious criminals? No. He choses to be a criminal himself!
  • Holly Short: Holly is the first elf to ever be a Captain of the L.E.P. (Lower Elements Police) squad. But she sometimes doesn't follow the rules, she does what's best to keep people alive, or keep the elves, pixies, trolls, centaurs, and dwarfs hidden underground.
  • Butler: The Fowl's manservant and Artemis' bodyguard, but also Artemis's friend and accomplice. Throughout the book, his first name is not revealed; this is possibly to prevent over-familiarity between bodyguard and client, and is referred to only as "Butler."
  • Foaly: The LEP's technical advisor. Portrayed as brilliant, but highly sarcastic, he is described as 'having few friends'. The time-stop used in the siege of Fowl Manor was his invention, and he provides numerous high-tech gadgets to the other characters.
  • Commander Julius Root: Known as 'Beetroot' by fellow fairies for his characteristic red face, he is Holly Short's superior officer. A father figure to the other fairies, and specifically Holly, he appears truly distressed at her disappearance, as shown with his conversation with Artemis in the whaling ship, 'If you've harmed one tip of my officer's pointy ears...'.
  • Mulch Diggums: A dwarf with very strong jaws and a even stronger prediliction to farting

Memorable Quotes

  • “Knock yourself out- or rather, don't.”
    Artemis Fowl
  • “Let us proceed under the assumption that the fairy folk do exist, and that I am not a gibbering moron.”
    Artemis Fowl
  • “You had to be careful with elfin ears--a few hours in the helmet and they strarted to flake. She (Holly) gave the tips a massage. No dry skin there. That was because sha had a daily moisturizing regime, not like some of the male LEP officers. When they took off their helmets, you'd swear it had just started to snow.”
  • “For a job like this, we need our very best. And that's me.”
    Commander Root
  • “'I said impressive. No need to get a swelled head.' The commander heard the sound of a roomful of laughter, and realized that Foaly had him on the speakers.”
  • “I hacked into Interpol. Not too difficult, I can tell you. They might as well have put out a welcome mat.”
    Foaly
  • “And if history had taught any lessons it was that humans couldn't get along with anyone, even themselves.”
  • “'If I didn't know you better, I'd say there was some human blood in you.' 'There's no call for that. I'm only doing my job.' 'Point taken. I'm sorry.' You didn't often hear Root apologizing, but then it had been a deeply offensive insult.”
    Root and Cudgeon
  • “'One, okay.' 'Two, fine.' 'Three. bored but alive.'”
  • “Shut up, Julius! I mean, quiet a moment, Commander.”
    Mulch
