This was the first Thomas Hardy that I read and despite this being a book that I studied in school, it represents the beginning of my love affair with all things Thomas Hardy. Who can resist the tragedy that is Michael Henchard... ohhh the pity of it! I think The Major of Casterbridge is the most...

I read this book because it was an assignment my son had in high school. It was just sitting on the table, not being read by him yet, so I hurried and read it. The story was so interesting and entwined. I loved the character descriptions and how they all pulled together in the story to have a part in the plot. I still remember the story and would recommend it to anyone but children as the story wouldn't be the type for children to read.

I liked this story. The constant mistakes of the mayor and the twist of fate for all the characters kept my interest. You could have a great discussion about a persons character after reading this book.

Another high school read that I oddly enjoyed. A rather typical tragedy story involving pride and ignorance. Still good though.

As an English major at the University of Iowa, I was lucky enough to love most titles assigned. This was no exception. The plot is superb.

A representative Hardy novel to cover an era on my shelf.

A sad story, as is typical of Hardy, but one that I found interesting; better than most of Hardy's stuff, second only to Far From the Madding Crowd.
