Although sort of old-fashioned in terms of the writing, the adventure was great and the story moved right along. I went on to read other books by Scott, but this one and the one about the Scottish knight ("Waverly"?) were really great.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“While I enjoyed Scott's descriptions and am glad I've read this because it is a classic, on the whole I didn't like either the characters, the plot, or the superficialness of it. Sorry if that's the wrong word. The historical inaccuracy bothers me as it gives me an impression of that time frame...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“As a classic tale of adventure, Ivanhoe is fun. I remember seeing a very engrossing movie version of Ivanhoe as a kid, so I really wanted to make the experience complete by reading the book. To my mind it was predictable, but the adventure was worth it.
While my edition's cover isn't posted (it's an old Alta Edition per the cover, but the publishing date isn't listed on the early pages), I chose my favorite looking one of the lot. ”
“One of my favorites in HS. Not even a required reading!”

Sorry if that's the wrong word. The historical inaccuracy bothers me as it gives me an impression of that time frame that is incorrect. Also, the immorality and brutality was horrific.”

“Ivanhoe is a fantastic tale of the days of knights, chivalry, Richard-the-Lionhearted, Robinhood, fair ladies, and the Crusades.
Scott's writing is so descriptive - paints such a vivid picture, that the reader is drawn deeply into the story, and held by its spell until the last word.
The only thing to taint the wonderful story is the stain of anti-semitism. In the end, though, it seems to me that Scott meant to expose the injustice of such bigotry in the unjust and unreasonable treatment of Rebecca and in her upright demeanor. Prejudice and stereotype, though, do come through in the character of her father, Isaac, with his love of money, and usery. The prejudice and stereotype were a mar on an otherwise nearly flawless novel of Medeival England.
Ivanhoe completely captivated me. I loved it! It is now among my favorites of all-time. I was sorry that it could not go on forever!
