Load of irrelevant and obvious claptrap. Pointless read.

This is a beautiful book that explores the rich poetry one can find as we consider our experiences of the architecture, spaces and environments of our life, and the architecture and space that remain in our memories. Why is it the we always remember going UP the stairs or ladder into the attic, and DOWN the staircase into the cellar of our childhood homes (if they had these features)? It's the observation and notation of specific experiential details like that which Bachelard expands into a worldview that touches on everything from the hermit's hut in the woods, to castles, corners, nests, shells, and such basic ideas as 'inside' vs. 'outside'. I kept a notebook with me while reading this book, and filled it with thoughts and copied quotations from this inspiring book. The book is a lovely dreamy treat. My highest recommendation!

Bachelard was a new thing for me. I discovered this book with a little help from my elementary school art teacher, and was pleasantly surprised. The book discusses the metaphysics of the spaces we inhabit, and I like the way he deals with the issues raised by the text, e.g. "the imaginary house". It left me asking for more of Bachelard's excellent essays.
