When Dickens is good, there is nobody that compares to him. And this was a really good Dickens book. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. Especially the woman who kept taking up all those causes while her children were going hungry. Pure Dickens.

Considering that this is one of Dickens' classics, I'm having a tough time getting through it - but I'm determnined to eventually find out how "Jarndyce & Jarndyce" turns out.

My favorite Dickens novel, it is at once a history lesson and a timeless portrait of humanity. I read it every year or two and each time marvel at how much I missed in the previous readings. While Dickens draws his characters narrowly, often comically so, his use of such characters to lay open the human condition for examination is genius. If his characters seem familiar to you, it is because you have met them in your own life. You have BEEN them, no less!
