The decline of a family, told from the viewpoint of a rich, traditional patrician family, especially one proud, stuck-up member. It wasn't really as good as it promised to be. More interesting than the work itself, I thought, is the background of it, the people on whom the characters were based on.

Thomas Mann really captured the atomosphere and life of the rise and fall of a German wealthy family in the 19th century. Their day-to-day life and the advantages and disadvantages of being rich coupled with their duties in the society they lived in. Not just a family saga, but a book with depth.

It is a saga and it has everything that one should expect: love, politics, morals and manners and lots of characters - the raise and the decay of a family.
