- Captain Richard Sharpe: Main protagonist. Captain in the British Army during the Napoleonic wars. He is a rifleman and a born leader in spite of coming up through the ranks.
- Major Kiely: Irish exile who serves in the Spanish Real Compania Irlandesa.
- Colenel Runciman: The Wagon master General assigned to be the liason officer between the British and the Real Compania Irlandesa. He is a gluton and a poor soldier.
- Sergeant Patrick Harper: Sharpe's reliable sergeant. He's Irish and in spite of his position is a friend to Sharpe.
- Colonel Hogan: Wellington's Irish Spymaster and intelligence gatherer.
