Ms. Vinge is my favorite author, but sometimes her plots and huge cast of characters become overwhelming. The basic gist of it began with two opposing cultures--the Summers and the Winters--and how the queen of the Winter culture has to be destroyed when it's time for the Summer Queen to rise. It follows the life of Moon Dawntreader, who's got a curious connection to the reigning Queen, and the culture of the "sybils" who can answer questions by tapping into what they think is a mystical storehouse of universal knowledge but is actually more like a crazy computer. . . . Wooo, mental Internet! (Too bad sybils can't answer their own questions. They're not conscious while they answer.) My only annoyance about these books besides their difficult complexity is that Ms. Vinge tends to use names for people and places that make a lot of use of apostrophes in typical science fiction-type unnecessary exotic-ness, and you need a pronunciation guide to talk about her books. (Don't worry, she includes one. Har.)”

Mrs Vernor Vinge has created a world of such complexity that it is the equal of any Tolkein or Potter. Follow this book with The Summer Queen for a complete experience. This book chronicles the rise of Moon Dawntreader Summer from her early years as a carefree "non-tech" child to her rise to the throne of the Winter Queen- the twist being that Moon is the clone of the highly technologically advanced Winter monarch. But Moon also has a special inborn ability, which will ultimately change the interaction of the Summer and Winter societies forever.”
