This book is the first of a series relating the adventures of Uhtred born as heir to the fortress of Banbury, but robbed of his inheritance, and Alfred the Great. Uhtred is captured and raised as a Dane, the people that invaded England in the 9th century. The Last Kingdom refers to Wessex, the last Saxon kingdom to stand against the Danish invasion.
