Quamman has an incredible ability to take complex topics and make them understandable. This book illustrates the difficulties of protecting species in light of the destruction of habitat.

Really good book, on Island Biogeography, and the story of the discovery of evolution.

"Islands are where species go to die," says the author in this strangely compelling novel about "the mysteries of evolution and extinction as they have been illuminated by the study of islands." This is some of the best writing I have ever read, and after having read it, I am left to wonder about the long-term effects of man's influence on this amazing planet we all live on. What will happen when man has finally succeeded in making islands of every bit of undeveloped land?

A fantastic, research-based commentary on the state of our world and the organisms with which we share it. The subtitle, "Island biogeography in an age of extinction" sums it up, but implies more than it obvious as the scale of "islands" ranges from a mangrove island off the coast of Florida to a continent. Quammen approaches his subject by going directly to the scientists asking and answering questions about the health of ecosystems and species around the world. He combines scientific investigation with adventure travel to keep the reader interested in subject at hand. Reading science has never been more enjoyable.

Okay, this isn't for everyone. You have to be really interested in biology and geography and all that. But if you are, it's entertaining, educational, and pretty much everything else you could ask for in a science book.

David Quammen writes on interesting, important topics, but I have a hard time with his writing style. I had to slog through this one.....it's hard work.

Ok. . . there are times when a book you've read is so amazing that you just need to go out and get your own copy. This is one of them.

Well written and entertaining book. I enjoyed it and was inspired to strive to be a better scientist. Unfortunately, I was reading this during a particularily exahusting field season, and so I don't remember as much as I would like. I hope to re-read it someday soon.
