  • Joseph Andrews: He is the brother of Pamela Andrews and is a virtuous young man. Lady Booby tries to seduce him while he works as her footman.
  • Lady Booby: She is a widow who attempts to seduce Joseph but is humiliated by his rejections.
  • Mrs. Slipslop: She also works for Lady Booby and, like her mistress, seeks to seduce Joseph.
  • Fanny Goodwill: A virtuous milkmaid that Joseph is in love with. Like Joseph, she undergoes many assaults and attempts at taking her virtue.
  • Mr. Abraham Adams: He is a priest that has a good heart but is absentminded and a little vain. He helps Joseph travel across the countryside and supports his marriage to Fanny.
  • Mr. Booby: This character is adapted from the Mr. B of Samuel Richardson's Pamela.
  • Pamela Andrews: Taken from Samuel Richardson's novel, this character is virtuous and beautiful. She is also Joseph's sister.
  • Mr. Andrews: Joseph and Pamela's father.
  • Mrs. Andrews: Joseph and Pamela's mother.
  • Sir Thomas Booby: The recently deceased master of Joseph and husband of Lady Booby.
  • Peter Pounce: Lady Booby's steward.
  • Two Ruffians: They attack Joseph while he is travelling and take everything he has, leaving him naked and injured on the side of the road.
  • Postilion: Finds Joseph after he is attacked by the ruffians and gives him his greatcoat.
  • Mr. Tow-Wouse: He is the owner of the inn that Joseph stays at while he recovers from the attack by the ruffians.
  • Mrs. Tow-Wouse: She is Mr. Tow-Wouse's frugal wife.
  • Betty: A chambermaid at Mr. Tow-Wouse's inn that isn't as innocent as she seems.
  • Mr. Barnabas: He is a clergyman who loves to drink. He helps to take care of Joseph after he is attacked by ruffians.
  • Surgeon: Helps Joseph recover from his injuries after he is attacked.
