Fabulous book, all the more so because its riches were largely unexpected when I began reading it. I have forgotten some of the plot points by now (I read it four years ago) but what remains is a memory of a powerfully humane, humanising intellect at work. In my mind, the genius of this book is that it rises over narrow questions of ideology or warring ethnicity to become a universal elegy for victims everywhere.
