Jamaica Inn

by Daphne Du Maurier

Jamaica Inn is a true classic. After the death of her mother, Mary Yellan travels to Jamaica Inn on the wild British moors to live with her Aunt Patience. The coachman warns her of the strange happenings there, but Mary is committed to remain at Jamaica Inn. Sadly, the covers of many of du Maurier's novels indicate they are second-rate, cheesy romances--check out the florid cursive on the covers of Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. When I finally got past the cover thanks to my curiosity, I found Jamaica Inn to be one of the more enjoyable reads I've experienced in quite a while. Reminiscient of Stevenson's Treasure Island in some ways, the novel begins with Mary Yellan, an orphan, settling into a traveler's inn and...

I wouldn't recommend this book... Didn't like the plot, didn't emphatise with the main character, didn't find it a worth read. It's so different from Rebecca!

I think this her best book. Its a classic with murder, mystery, storms and smugglers set in the wild English moors.
    Read the book description:
The coachman tried to warn her away from the ruined, forbidding place on the rainswept Cornish coast. But young Mary Yellan chose instead to honor her mother's dying request that she join her frightened Aunt Patience and huge, hulking Uncle Joss Merlyn at Jamaica Inn. From her first glimpse on that raw November eve, she could sense the inn's dark power. But never did Mary dream that she would become hopelessly ensnared in the vile, villainous schemes being hatched within its crumbling walls -- or that a handsome, mysterious stranger would so incite her passions ... tempting her to love a man whom she dares not trust.
