Tatsumi's stories in this collection are much more stark and depressing than in The Push Man and Other Stories. He remains masterful with what appear to be simple strokes, communicating so much with so little. From the ubiquitously blank-faced protagonist to the shocking solace of "Unpaid", Tomine makes us squirm--at the most horrifically mundane things of a modern (and post-) existence.
