Excellent book! What an extraordinary child and adult. The story tells of how this 7-year-old child helped on her family's sheep farm, doing the amazing physical labor one would never expect from someone so small. She grows up to fight sexism and become a world class scholar and historian. All while emotionally supporting her mother who has become a true cross for her to bear. She manages to keep that stiff upper lip so socially necessary to the crown's upstanding citizens. Goal-oriented, non-stoppable people like Jill Ker are so rare and remarkable that I can only look at them in awe. This definitely makes me want to read more from this author.

I've had this book on my list to read for more than a decade. There are many reasons I'm glad I waited until just this time in my life to read it. I learned a lot about myself as I read about Jill Conway's childhood environment and struggles. We are all a product of our early experiences and we should embrace the good parts and learn from the struggles.

I truly enjoyed this book. It moved quickly and is very well written. I usually do not like memoirs but really liked this one - an amazing woman.

Not sure I really ended up liking her at the end, but then I would not have been welcomed in her circle of intellectuals either.

This was a beautifully written book and I loved it. I learned so much about life in the Australian bush and the perseverence of an amazingly strong young woman. Her quest for learnig was inspirational. I recommend this book to everyone.

Autobiography of girlhood downunder on a sheep ranch. (Visions of the Thornbirds less the romance.) I enjoyed the family and agricultural aspects of this book from a young girl's perspective.

Jill Ker Conway paints wonderful pictures of the Australian landscape in the reader's imagination as you read about her early life.
