Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter)

Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter (Paperback))

by Laurell K. Hamilton

Anita Blake may be small and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law--as long as they don't get too nasty. Now someone's killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees--with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting--to help figure out who and why.
Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't... (read more)

I went out and bought the first five books after reading the first one and just had a blast reading them. I then went out and bought the next three and have never finished the last one and a half books. I also read one of the books in her elf/fantasy series.... it was the same as the later anita blake books. total waste of time if you had enjoyed the earlier books.
I even started to have bad dreams reading the later books.

I'm not sure what Ms. Hamilton started smoking, but whatever it was ,it brought out some dark sexual stuff in her. Nothing I really needed to read. I have quit reading her stuff totally which is really sad as she was a great author at one time. Now it's just very dark fantasy porn.

    Book Description:
Introducing Anita Blake, vampire hunter extraordinaire. Most people don't even bat an eye at vampires since they've been given equal rights by the Supreme Court. But Anita knows better--she's seen their victims. . . . A serial killer is murdering vampires, however, and now the most powerful vampire in town wants Anita to find the killer. (bn.com)

Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't human. The city's most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years old and looks like a 10-year-old girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita's professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn't playing along--yet. This popular series has a wild energy and humor, and some very appealing characters--both dead and alive. (Shelfari.com)

What did you think of the book?
I'm a sucker (no pun intended) for Vampires...whether that be books or movies, I'm there. This series is a little different than I normally read, but it came highly recommended by a coworker of mine who has very similar taste (and nearly as big an affinity for Vamps).

Guilty Pleasures was a great opening for the series. We meet Anita Blake, aka The Executioner, who is blackmailed into helping the Master of the City find whomever is killing vampires. I love Anita because she is a strong character. She's a bad ass chick and I always enjoy reading books with strong female characters. She gets on my nerves sometimes, but I can definitely appreciate her sarcasm, gun-toting abilities, and the fact that she drives a classic muscle car. :)

    Would you recommend this book?
Probably. Definitely if you tend to like vampires, werewolves, ghouls, zombies, and the like. I've read some about the author and series online and have heard people complain that Anita is a Mary Sue for Hamilton, but frankly my dear...I am just enjoying the ride. Who cares if an author wants to create a fictionalized version of herself that carries a gun, has a sexy vampire (so his name's a little gay...he's still hot) lusting after her, and routinely kicks some undead ass? Isn't that how most writers start anyway? By immersing him or herself in an alternate reality? I know it's what made me start writing. I'd have given anything to escape the reality of my life...and what better way than to write yourself into a different one?

I've read all the Anita Blake books (Guilty Pleasures - Danse Macabre) and must say that I am really disappointed with the current state of the series. In the beginning, the books had strong storylines, a real plot, and a mystery to solve. The books gradually just became completely plot-less. Now each book is nothing but 1) Anita needs more and more sex to feed the ardeur, 2) Anita develops yet another unexplainable power, 3) Anita feels conflicted about all the sex, and 4) some other vampire/werewolf/etc shows up to challenge Anita and her group. The books have gone from worthwhile mystery novels to poorly written and boring erotica. I like erotica but I like well-written erotica such as that found in Susie Bright compilations. I gave Laurell Hamilton another chance and started reading her Meredith Gentry series. It's just the same as the Blake novels only the protagonist is a fairy hybrid and not a whatever-Anita-is-now. I recommend this series only if you like junk-food reading sprinkled with lame erotica.

Interesting premise, good characters, but the plot was lacking a bit. Had the potential to be REALLY good, but ended up being just...okay. Regardless, entertaining enough to give the next few in the series a try.

For me it started out mildly amusing and yet kind of boring, but then it started to really pick up about halfway through the book. I actually liked this book. It was amusing, had some great death scenes, and even reminded me of my home Missouri. :)

I am having difficulty getting into this book after reading the Stephenie Meyer Twilight series and the Ann Rice Lasat Vampire series. It's just a different kind of vampire book. Not sure if I can finish it.

Well, I bought this series because I liked the Merry one. I'm not sure about this one. But I will not give up on the first one. Anita Blake is an Animater which is a Vampire Hunter slash someone who can raise a zombie. I am confused. The book was about a master vampire who is a thousand years old who damands that Anita find who is killing master vampires or else. Anita is not afraid of much but this tiny Nikolaos has her scared for her life and those she cares for.
The story is vivid. But lacks that bonding of characters that make you want to pick up the next one in a series. But I will give it a go..

I really liked this book, and am sad to see that they go downhill later in the series. But, I guess that is common, so I will take what I like and quit then like I did with Patricia Cornwall. Maybe characters have some sort of lifespan and then they get repeatative.
