Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter (Paperback))

by Laurell K. Hamilton

Anita Blake may be small and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law--as long as they don't get too nasty. Now someone's killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees--with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting--to help figure out who and why.
Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't... (read more)

I've read all the Anita Blake books (Guilty Pleasures - Danse Macabre) and must say that I am really disappointed with the current state of the series. In the beginning, the books had strong storylines, a real plot, and a mystery to solve. The books gradually just became completely plot-less. Now each book is nothing but 1) Anita needs more and more sex to feed the ardeur, 2) Anita develops yet another unexplainable power, 3) Anita feels conflicted about all the sex, and 4) some other...

I went out and bought the first five books after reading the first one and just had a blast reading them. I then went out and bought the next three and have never finished the last one and a half books. I also read one of the books in her elf/fantasy series.... it was the same as the later anita blake books. total waste of time if you had enjoyed the earlier books.
I even started to have bad dreams reading the later books.

I'm not sure what Ms. Hamilton started smoking, but...

As a newbie to this series, I find all your observations intriguing. I was a Buffy fan, so when book #1 ended with Anita saying, "I don't date vampires, I kill them" I wondered where this all would go. Thanks

I agree with many of the previous statements - the first five books in this series are really great. They are gritty and have a good plot. I recommend reading the series up to Blue Moon - then stop. Every book after that is a dark 24 hour binge repeating the same story with different players. The characters are lost and floundering.

I am so glad that I am not the only one that feel this way. Not only does everything revolve around sex, not necessarily a bad thing, but it the same repetitive sex. It the same old thing with a new lover in her bed.. well make that lovers.

Too many of the characters are hung up on the same old issues. Anita is hung up on the same old issues. I think the characters and the world she has created has so much potential, but she is moving at a snails pace to get you any where near milestones for her characters. You end up having to wait 3-4 books before you get to anything conclusive or truly interesting.

The dark sexual stuff doesn't bother me, it just the repetition of it all. It shouldn't take up 75% of the story.

I'm not sure what Ms. Hamilton started smoking, but whatever it was ,it brought out some dark sexual stuff in her. Nothing I really needed to read. I have quit reading her stuff totally which is really sad as she was a great author at one time. Now it's just very dark fantasy porn.

I thought this book was quite fun and enjoyable. And I love Anita's sense of humor.
