I read a lot of gay romance, some historical and others modern. The characters are well-developed -- from the sensitive and vulnerable Ambrose Standish who yearns for love and understanding -- to Rafe Goshawk the strong and dominating landowner who fears love. I felt the romance and despair of cities such as London, Paris and Venice during the Napoleanic period in which this story is written. I cried when I read the last line!! If ever a line put a punctuation mark on a book, the last line...
