I read this book twenty five years ago, and I enjoyed it this time even more than the first time. The midwestern setting and people of Chicago are so familiar in their habits and ways of living to me, and the characters are timeless. The way Dreiser presented the significance of all the events going on in the "big city" during that period in America was mesmerizing.

I love this book! I would not hesitate to pick it up and read it again in another twenty years.

I started and stopped reading this book several times before I finished it. I found it slow and painful reading. I did like that this book, written at the turn of the century, was about a woman finding a way to her own independence and empowerment. A woman once manipulated by men as a victim who ultimately stood on her own two feet and took care of herself. Otherwise, I can't say I enjoyed this book.
