I read this in college and was captured by Rosa and her story. This is a good book for anyone who wants to understand city life.

Basically, you have this one woman who grew up with a mother that was more critical than anything, so in turn she was hard on herself; She gets some kids and don't become a good example to them at all. Out of the eight or so kids she had, only like two of them did something for themselves. The majority of them ended up doing illegal things, stealing, drugging, prostitution, and real sadly, they ended up with AIDS and died. It's not a pretty story, but in urban America, it's a story that does happen.
