“"The High Lord" is the fascinating and well-written completion to an excellent trilogy. It would definitely merit full stars except for the fact that I worry that maybe I only like the books because I am completely and inexorably in love with the namesake of this book, the High Lord, Akkarin. This is my second-favorite trilogy, which, I believe, is saying something because I spend most of my life reading. The characters have a lot of depth, and it is very easy to relate to Sonea, the main character, as she has to decide between good and evil, without knowing which is which. I would recommend this book to everyone with a healthy interest in romance, action, or fantasy.”

A lot of adventure and fighting in this one, as well as further character development for the main characters. It's really a great book, although the ending really pissed me off.”

I have been a fan of her work, and this series especially, finding her take on the fantasy genre both uniquely interesting, as well as familiar enough that it has the elements of fantasy that I love.
The story takes place directly where the second left off. The protagonist of this story is girl called Sonea. She is enrolled in the Magician’s Guild, training to become a magician, and had rapidly established herself as one of the strongest novices in the guild. She discovered that the High Lord, essentially the head of the Magician’s Guild, Akkarin practices black magic, a form of magic banned for hundreds of years, due to the fact that it involves taking life energy from others. The High Lord is extremely powerful, and she chose to keep it a secret, but it was discovered by the High Lord that she knows, and so, has “chosen” her, meaning he becomes her guardian, to keep an eye on her, under the cover story that he is providing extra tutelage. This is where the story begins. It follows Sonea as she attempts to get continue with her education. As the story progresses, she begins to discover the motives behind her master’s practicing of forbidden magic and the great danger that faces her land, culminating in a decision she faces which could very well decide the fate of those around her and her life.
As I said before, I find Trudi Canavan’s writing to be fascinating. Her strong and complex characters and the magical world that they reside, all tied together by her intricate plot, as well as several sub-plots. I think that is where her strongest point is, the complexity in her writing, be it the characters or the plot. Her writing is aimed at the young adult audience, but poses no problem to myself. The fact that it is aimed for an older audience lends it an element of maturity that only serves to make her writing more fascinating and interesting.
My favorite part of her writing is the characters she creates. Her characters are always interesting, in that they always have some special trait that reminds the reader of who they are. For her main characters, whom the story follows, the characters are even more complex. They have inner demons and past experiences that affect them or conflict with them as they try to carry on with their lives.
This book, in my opinion, is her best work yet. It is a spell-binding tale of magic, fantasy and excitement that will keep you on your toes right through to the end, an excellent ending to an excellent trilogy.”
“I'd have given it a 5 star rating had the ending been different. Yes yes, I know the author's reasons...but I am an unashamed romantic, and can't help my feelings on the matter.
After finishing the Trilogy for the first time, I would recommend re-reading it, just to gain from Akkarin's perspective.”
“This book makes up for all that the 1st two books in the trilogy lacked. Its amazing! Its fast paced, thrilling, it builds on the characters and their relationships and it sets you through almost every emotion u can think of! I couldn't put it down! I took several months to finish the other 2 books, but this 1 was finished in several days. Now I feel like I don't have anything to read that could be as good.
If anything it ended way to quickly, it would have been nice to have something to wrap up the story, just as a few other reviewers said. An epilogue or a "10 years later in Imardin...." like what happened at the end of Harry potter would have been good....
But regardless this book is brilliant and the ending does leave the reader with a need for more, I guess the author wanted to leave the fate of the remaining characters up to our imagination. Whatever the reason, The High Lord is well worth the read and worth all the time spent hacking through the slow and slightly boring earlier books in the trilogy just to get to this final climax!”
