Glad I read this, what a great re-start to the series. Darker than I imagined it would be, but that's good. Batman and other superheroes have been watered down by cartoons and media too much. At least the new films get it right!

There were two reasons I picked this up: (1) it's Batman duh! and (2) Frank Miller wrote it. With that being said, I was not disappointed with the read. I couldn't put it down, and was actually surprised at how different this read than, say, some of Miller's other graphic novels such as "The Dark Knight Returns." Many of Miller's novels are graphic violently and linguistically. This was a nice change from that. I wasn't too impressed with the artwork; however, it was a bit reminiscent of "DKR." I wish I had read this before seeing "Batman Begins" because the backstory was obviously taken from this novel (i.e. the fact that Barbara Gordon is Com. Gordon's wife and not his daughter, Batman getting away in a horde of bats). A very entertaining reading overall.

It is amazing how much of this was used in some of the recent Batman movies. Once again Miller serves as the inspiration for the modern view of Batman.

Simply amazing. It was written over twenty years ago but is still as badass as can be. This is probably the best reboot of Batman and I think it is the best way for people getting into Batman to start. The dialogue is amazingly well written and there are a lot of one liners that gave me chills. Definite MUST read for fans of Batman.

The Batman is the most recongisable characters in western media (and now even in Japan). When voice actor Kevin Conroy was described the new incarnation of Batman he would be voicing he said "This sounds like Hamlet".
While I do not normally like Frank Millar for his overly stylized "Drugs, sex, viloence and dystopian rock n' roll!", I have to admit, I loved this book.
It doesn't paint Gordon as an idiot as earlier takes on "The Batman story" have.
This is a grounded take on the start of the Dark Knight's caped crusaded that is rooted in realism with a reasonable suspension of disbeleife.
If you love Batman and haven't read this: You Must

Frank Miller is best at writing hard violence with a sense of humor and spirit. Here, because of the artist, it is 90% spirit and 100% hardcore plot. The boners popped over this have been massive, and well deserved, but the entire 'Batman as insanely real' bit has of course been done and double done. The art makes this a masterpiece though. I should reread this.

More Frank Miller, and more of his early stuff. You'll really like Jim Gordon in this series.
