Liked It“For about two weeks when I was reading this, I became the annoying guy that always talked about Cod. But it turns out that this type of fish is really, really important. And there are recipes in the back.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“Gave up on reading with 40 pages left. Read another book... then it was bugging me too much that I didn't finish it so I'm picking it up again. Hopefully will be done with it tonight!” see full review » see other reviews » |

Going into this book I expected an onslaught of monotonous facts and stories only understandable to the author and only interesting to the person who wrote it. Instead every little fact clung to my mind and was eye opening. this was not simply a summary of a fish it was a summary of the world and how it has been shped by somehting that is often taken for granted. This book showcases that the history of one thing is interconnected with the rest of the world. America was discovered by the Basque in the fifteenth century not Columbus. A society had been founded on the catching of a fish and the world has prospered from it. The book is not particularly deep but it is an enjoyable meal. One last note the recipes that are at the end of every chapter, and the last seventy pages of the book, will have someone craving cod for weeks to come. Knowing about the history of your meal only makes it more appetizing.”

A well written biography, making the lead character to be something more than just a fish. A superb touch for this genre of books is the inclusion of recipes and tidbits at the end of chapters.”

Through the story of a particular species of fish, I learned about the history or Newfoundland as well as the political, religious, and social systems that led to the demand for cod. I'm keen to try some of the cod recipes that conclude every chapter.”
