“The appreciation for the book says "A sleuth to preserve", while i'd say she's a sleuth to avoid. A lady detective, i had thought would be more impulsive and reckless. Although she was reckless, what was missing was the modus operandi. May be, the plot is more closer to reality than say, Mr. Holmes; but for a reader, Holmes would appeal more.”Sam wrote this review Wednesday, August 21, 2013. “3.5 stars. Another good Maisie Dobbs mystery. Maisie is contacted to determine if an artist's death was an accident or if there is more to it than what the police believe. Strong characters as usual.”karmakat wrote this review Wednesday, April 17, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“English detective Maisie Dobbs is back. This time, she is investigating the apparent accidental death of an up and coming artist. The police have ruled it accidental, but his twin sister is not quiet sure. In the course of her investigation, Maisie runs into smugglers, suspicisou art dealers, unscrupulous customs officials, and has to deal with her own romance issues. We get an engaging mystery and an uncompormiseing portrait of England in between the world wars.”Mac D wrote this review Friday, March 29, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? “Maisie is hired by a journalist to verify whether her twin brother died due to an accidental fall or he was murdered. Well developed story with surprise ending. Includes stories regarding the horrors of WWI.”BarbB wrote this review Saturday, December 8, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“A bit slow in many places but Maisie is still an inspiring sleuth. Love the time period and England.”EISSPE wrote this review Saturday, November 3, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“Another strong entry into the Maisie Dobbs series. Winspear continues to explore the long-reaching and long-lasting effects of war and a society still struggling to deal with all of the phsical, emotional, financial, and culturl changes that the war brought. And all this while the seeds of the next war are being sown.
Winspear writes with such detail that you are easily emerged in a different time and place. Maisie continues to grow as a person and struggles with her own demons. Sometimes I feel the need for her to move on, but on the other hand, I realize that the effects of the war were profound. Mixed feeling on this topic. But life is moving on for Maisie and I feel that she will continue to get on with her life.
Characters are always interesting and representative of the times. And like in other the books in the series, the truth does not always go down easy. I appreciate the ''shades of grey" in the stories and the fact that no one is portrayed as completely good or evil. I think the ups and downs of life portrayed here are very realistic, especially for the time.”
