I absolutely loved this book. I couldn't wait to read more in the series. When I read the final one, I emailed Winspear to find out when the next one is due out. These books are fabulous. I am a huge fan of being educated while reading fiction. If you don't know much about World War I, this book will give you a realistic insight into the machinations of war time, enlisted, civilian, wounded, etc.
One of my favorite books in a while. The prose is lovely. It's a good story about a young woman in the 20's and her life as it unfolds. She becomes a private investigator in London. Wonderful romantic setting and history. I am selecting this book for my daughter as well.
I am loving the whole series and waited months for her latest book An Incomplete Revenge which I am reading very slowly so it will last. What other books might you recommend that is being read in England?
This was a splendid read and a chance to learn what it must have been like for a young, intelligent woman, caught between classes in changing times. This is just the beginning of a series that must be read.
Possibly what I liked best about this novel was the heart-rending portrayal, through the voices and memories of Maisie and Billy, of young frightened soldiers during WWI, many of whom were wounded and scarred emotionally and mentally if not physically by their war experiences. At the very least, their outlook on life was changed. The same could be about many war nurses like Maisie Dobbs. Unfortunately, what was said about the participant of WWI could pretty much be said universally about many participants in all wars.”
Not sure if you like Anne of Green Gables. There was a movie made purporting to be the 3rd in the series...But Anne is a nurse similar to Maisie, i.e. her true love is a doctor on the front. I keep envisioning the movie when I think about Maisie & Simon.
So often a detective has some hidden depths that you slowly delve into throughout a story. I like the introduction to Maisie as a person.
