I really like the book but I did not like the ending as much as I thought I was going to. I find this book to be powerful because of the things that the main character went through and the obstacles she went through. I recommended for anyone to read about it.

The book The Skin I’m In by Sharon G. Flake is a realistic fiction book. The book is written in first person. The whole book is totally a life-lesson. Also the book touches your feelings while reading it. The author uses similes and good character development which helps you understand the characters better.

Summary: The book talks about Maleeka Madison, who was the main character in the book. Maleeka cared about her looks. Peers laughed at Maleeka, because of two reasons. Her skin color was really black; that’s why others make fun of her. Her clothes were made by her mom; sometimes they were uneven. That was the second reason why other students were making fun of her. She had only one real friend, Sweet. She did have one other friend, Charlese, but she wasn’t very close with her. Charlese was a rich girl, who had clothes from the designers. Therefore, Charlese brought expensive clothes from the designers to Maleeka. However, in order to wear those clothes, Maleeka had to do homework for Char. One time, Maleeka got in trouble because of Char. After getting in trouble, Char disappeared from school. Towards the end of the book, Maleeka fell in love with Caleb Jamaal Asaam.

In conclusion, I would recommend the book for everyone to read. The chapters were short, but interesting. Also the book wasn’t long; it had only 171 pages. You could easily read the book in one to two days without getting bored or feeling forced to read it. I liked the way the author, Sharon G. Flake, used similes, because it was really helpful in understanding the characters’ emotions and feelings. Sharon G. Flake developed her characters by their actions and thoughts. The way the author developed the characters helped me as a reader to learn more about the characters. My rating for the book would be ten out of ten. I really liked the book, and I am recommending the book to read.

"The Skin I'm In" is a very good book, like "Tar Beach" to either have students relate to or to have students realize that people live different ways, and this is a common way for people to live. It goes through the ups and downs of an young teen, African American, female. This young girl,Maleeka, suffers throughout the book, feeling uncomfortable in her own skin, as her peers constantly make fun of how dark skinned she is and calling her ugly. A new teacher comes to the school seeing the good in Maleeka, but making Maleeka feel like she is singeling her out. In the mean time a group of girls makes her feel wanted, providing her with more up to date clothing, while using her as a scape goat. By the end of the story, they get themselves in a real pickle and only true character will determine the end of the book.
    Uses in a Classroom:
    Characterization
    Bullying
Journal writing from the point of view of Maleeka, Maleeka's Mother, Ms. Saunders, Charlese, etc.

This book was about a girl named Maleeka who had troubles at school. She was picked on because of her dark skin color. She just wanted to be normal. A new teacher came to her school with a white patch on her face...Maleeka thought that she was going to be picked on too. But her teacher had a different attitude about it. She didn't care about what others said. She was comfortable in her own skin. Maleeka has to learn how to do the same. i recommend this book to ppl who like uplifting stories.
