These two books, together address the timeless question of why there is suffering and evil. If you are religious or agnostic, Russell's exploration of this question is satisfying and the story telling is superb. I require a greater suspension of disbelief when reading science fiction, and this book is no exception. However, the story telling is generally so accomplished that my willingness is very high. It's easy to forgive several overly-contrived plot elements because the story, on the whole is quite compelling.
Through the devices of time travel and culture clash Russell examines the unintended negative and positive consequences of exercising our free will within our biological, spiritual, cultural, intellectual limitations.

“This was the followup to The Sparrow by the same author. While I enjoyed finding out what happens to Emilio after the end of first book, on the whole I found this book tedious and hard to finish. The jumps between time periods seem harder to follow, and the characters weren't as engaging.”

Science fiction is not usually my first choice for reading material but after the Sparrow I wanted to read the sequel to see what became of the main character.
I enjoyed this book even more if that's possible.”
“Not quite as good as The Sparrow but still quite engaging and intelligent. I think she lost track of some of the plot lines in her effort to make her big point at the end. Still, a great read.”
