Accidents, evil plots, and general misfortune abound when, in their continuing search for a home, the three Baudelaire orphans are sent to live and work in a sinister lumbermill.

  • Sunny Baudelaire: The youngest Baudelaire child. Has razor-sharp teeth, and likes to bite things.
  • Klaus Baudelaire: The middle child. Loves books, and is very smart.
  • Violet Baudelaire: The oldest Baudelaire child. Invents things. Ties her hair in a ribbon when thinking.
  • Mr. Poe: Violet, Klaus and Sunny's care-taker, and puts them in different homes.
  • Sir: Boss of the factory, and the orphans' new guardian.
  • Foreman Flacutono: The terrible foreman of the mill.
  • Phil: A worker in the mill, he is very optimistic.
  • Dr. Georgina Orwell: An eye doctor with a strange-looking building. Also author of the book 'Advanced Ocular Science'.
  • Charles: The other boss of the factory, Sir's partner
  • Count Olaf: A man who is after the Baudelaire Fortune, and uses many disguises. He is very awful.
  • Shirley: The receptionist for Dr. Orwell.
  • Beatrice: A woman rarely mentioned in the book; Lemony Snicket loved her, and the book is dedicated to her.
