I am looking forward to picking up the sequel. I thought the use of animals was quite effective. Even though they were relatively neutral in...” see full review » see other reviews » |

Maus I ends when the father is thrown into Auschwitz in 1944. The story is obviously amazing, given that all these incredible experiences were lived. Another interesting element is that Jews are portrayed as mice, Germans as cats and Poles as pigs. I would have been entirely confused by this, except that I read a quote on the page with the copyright by Adolf Hitler: “The Jews are undoubtedly a race, but they are not human.” Changing the different races to animals was an interesting idea, but I’m not sure how much I like it. For one thing, I love cats and this gives them a bad rap. It also makes the lines between races much easier to see, which I do not think is necessarily the case. ”

Spiegelman doesn't shrink from an honest portrayal of his father (warts and all). Understandably, I think a lot of Holocaust memoirs cast survivors as angelic when the truth is that they were humans who were horribly treated, which this graphic novel makes clear. ”

I read Persepolis this summer and although I thought it was good, the pictures did not add anything for me and the story seemed too simplified since I have read other great stories about the 1979 revolution in Iran; however, when i read Maus, I thought it was very good. The pictures help you distance yourself from the story and help you comprehend the horrific events which they are illustrating. I really enjoyed this and I am looking forward to reading the second one. ”

“This is a classic, though untraditional, history book. Very moving.”
