I tried reading this a few years ago and gave up after 100 pages, possible the only book I've given up on.
Today I start again after a year of nagging from my fiance! Hope I enjoy it this time
i trust you finished this time round. the rest of it is worth trudging through the first 100 pages
The movie is not a patch on this brilliant book which captures all shades of life..its whimsical, beautifully written with a lot of imagery. Makes you cry and laugh at the same time.
One of my favorite reads. Beautifully written. Wonderful Greek history. Looking for other books by this author. Has anyone read "Birds Without Wings"?
One of the best books to movies I have seen. It really tells the story.
Am finding my second attempt to read this only slightly more successful, that is to say, I've forced myself to keep reading. As far as I know it was originally written in English, but it feels to me as though it's a poor translation from another language - clunky, every other word is pulled straight out of the Obscure Words dictionary... not to mention the constant jumping in and out of French, Italian, Greek... most of which I can decipher by context, but b/c there are so many other words I don't recognize, I can hardly tell what's supposed to be English and what isn't. And I'm a fairly well-educated adult with two degree on my way to a 3rd qualification. So why does this book make me feel think? Annoying.
OK... and did I mention I'm well over a hundred pages into the thing and still no sign of the main character? This is becoming a will of force to get to the "good part" that everyone keeps saying is there...
One of my favorite finds! Beautiful love story that takes place in Greek war time. I have only read this one a billion times! a must!
