I enjoyed The Real Story--though it was widely savaged by critics and Donaldson fans, but I love the examination of -perceived-reality. The remainder of the series lost steam for me.

The GapSeries is Donaldson's finest work. I found the Covenant Chronicles derivative (of Tolkien, specifically) and prurient.

The Gap Series still dwells on violence and rape (rather like a John Irving novel) but none of the horror is without meaning. Everything that happens (good and bad) has a profound impact on the story as it unravels.

Personally, I found keeping a little journal about who/what/when/where and why was helpful.
