“I have no idea when I first read this, but it is one of the best YA novels about mental illness I've ever read. It took on a whole new meaning for me after when I began my struggle with chronic depression in earnest, and after I started teaching and I had several students diagnosed with severe mental illnesses so once again I was seeing the themes from a different angle. MC is a 16-year-old psychotic in a mental hospital. Her parents are in denial about her illness. She's created a world in her mind that she retreats into. It has its own language, rules, even its own gods. Her journey back from madness and the fear of reality, fear of having to be sane, being afraid to take medication, etc. is made easier by a dedicated and caring psychiatrist. This is a fascinating book and I found myself really rooting for the main character. ”Michelle L wrote this review Tuesday, March 10, 2009. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“The plot was good but I found it extremely hard to follow. I guess I'll just read this book in 2 years, and maybe then I'll understand it better, because I kept falling asleep every time I was reading it.”xxlordloss wrote this review Friday, January 9, 2009. “A wonderfully written story that makes one see through the pain and prejudices a mental patient has to cope with. Brilliant.”Irina Marina wrote this review Tuesday, December 2, 2008. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“One of the best books I've ever read!
I think the best part of this book is the title and the part where the title is explained.
I've read this book 3 times now and it still doesn't get boring.
If you're a young reader or don't read this book in your 1st language it might be a little difficult because of the 2 different worlds. It's really worth it to read though.”
“This book was, in my opinion, incredible. Deborah the protagonist, is the most endearing character you will ever read. Her voice, even told from a third person perspective, is enticing and magical. The ending was not at all predictable. I'm very glad I found this book.”Alyson May P wrote this review Thursday, September 18, 2008. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“I read this book years ago--I was actually probably about 12 or so--my mom had been hospitalized several times, so maybe that is why she gave it to me to read. Its almost like reading a fantasy book, if I remember correctly. I plan on reading it again soon.”Kiki68 wrote this review Tuesday, August 19, 2008. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful?
