This book is rated 5 stars because of the profound impact that it had in my life, not necessarily because the book itself is all that great. In fact it seems elementary to me now... but it really woke me up at the time.

The premise of this book is that Christians are called to be salt in the world and the only way for salt to be effective is for it to be in contact with whatever it needs to impact. We need to be in contact with our culture to impact it. Our saltiness can preserve, or at least slow the process of decay. Briner goes through the culture shaping venues of movies, television, books and visual arts, showing that Christians can and should be involved in these areas. We should be excellent in all we do and should get out into the marketplace so we can rub our saltiness on others. His book and thoughts were challenging as well as encouraging because he didn’t just berate Christians and churches, but had some good strategies as well as stories of how this philosophy has worked in real life. I was inspired to write some letters to the editor of my local newspaper as a result of this book.
