Sandi J wrote this review Thursday, July 16 2009. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No“Last night I was up until about 1:00 A.M. finishing reading Directed Verdict by Randy Singer. My Paralegal Teacher awarded me with this book last semester for having the highest score in our class. I was in the middle of reading another book and wanted to finish that before I began this. I have to say Directed Verdict is excellent!
I enjoyed this book for several reasons. As a graduate of William and Mary and a resident of the Williamsburg, VA area for 5 years, I delighted in reading about some of my old haunts in this book. I remembered the romantic atmosphere at The Trellis and the fun walking down DOG (Duke of Gloucester) street and the dread of driving through the Hampton Roads Tunnel. It brought back memories of Confusion Corner and the unusual mixture of tourists and college students. It was very cool to read a story with a legal student from a place that is so near and dear to my heart.
I enjoyed this book because it really gave some inside view of how paralegals work (and since I want to be one, this information was absolutely fascinating!) I don't know if I will be as daring and able to think on my feet as Nikki Moreno, but boy, she was on top of things! And Leslie Connors...well, let's just say that you can't underestimate the quiet types.
Then there was the spiritual aspect thrown in which I didn't expect, but for me, added to the story. Christians are persecuted in spots around the world (and including here at home in the U.S.) I was drawn in by the main case that this story revolved around.
And if all that wasn't enough, this book is written by a lawyer. It is fast paced, well-written, and exciting.
I am looking forward to reading more of Mr. Singer's books! If you are looking for a new author to try out, I highly recommend this one!

“Randy Singer- Directed Verdict (WaterBrook Press 2002), 4.5/5 Stars
Randy Singer's talent flowed out onto every page of this book. A small-time lawyer ends up with the most controversial case of his career. This case draws him and his team into a tangled web of intrigue and deception. American missionaries are attacked by the religious police, the Muttawa, in Saudi Arabia and after losing her husband a woman brings her case to Brad Carson, who decides to take the case after hearing her plight. The leader of the Muttawa will stoop to any level to win the case. He intimidates witnesses, bribes jurors, and even uses members of Carson's team to his own means.
This well-written drama is a very good book that I recommend to anyone who loves courtroom drama. I know I had said that I was disappointed with it earlier in the week, but after reading the second half of the book I have changed my own verdict on this book. Directed Verdict starts off with a little bit of action that sets up the storyline to follow. It then has what I found to be a long section of lull, only to finish off with an intense ending that kept me guessing right up to the end. The characters in this book are well-developed and strong. Singer developed the characters skilfully and did what I love in the end, he tossed in a few unexpected twists and turns, going in directions you won't foresee. His plot is well-thought-out and, although a little bit slow in parts, it compels you to keep reading, anxious to find out how it comes to the ending you know is coming.
Great work Singer! I look forward to reading more of your work.

“I began this book with a bit of skepticism because I just didn't see how a Christian legal novel could compare with the likes of John Grisham. Not only am I surprised at the quality of this novel, but I am surprised I have never heard of Randy Singer before now. Directed Verdict is right up there with anything Grisham has ever written, maybe even better.
Great writers write what they know, and Randy Singer knows the law. This story takes you into the depths of international law, and Singer is thorough without ever being dry or boring. Your heart will go out to missionary Sarah Reed as her and her family face severe persecution for their unwavering faith. Lawyer Brad Carson takes Sarah's case and files an unprecedented civil rights suit against the nation of Saudi Arabia and her persecutors.
Singer's novel is full of unexpected twists and turns and riveting courtroom scenes. There are themes of forgiveness and faith all throughout and even a love story. I was hooked from page one and I couldn't put it down. If you love legal thrillers you'll love Randy Singer.”
