Practical Magic

by Alice Hoffman

For most adults, fairy tales are among the childish things we've put away. Alice Hoffman, however, feels differently. Practical Magic starts out as a tale of Gillian and Sally Owens, two orphaned girls whose aunts are witches--of a mild sort. For the past two centuries, Owens women have been blamed for all that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town, ever since their ancestor arrived,... (read more)

Reading this book was such a pleasurable experience. I always find my visits to Hoffman's mystical world fascinating. The imagery she is able to interject puts her books on a much different level. I like to recommend this book to my female friends because of it's innate sense of femininity.

Love the movie, but it is not a true representation of the wonderful story that Hoffman has created. The movie is the bubbly sister of the much of introspective book.

So, I'm over half way through this book and I don't see it leading, well, anywhere. I'm sure all this character development and interaction must be good for something but it's not doing wonders for the storyline......OK, so I finally finished the book. The rest of the story actually has plot and drama, so don't give up on it right away

I read Practical Magic some years ago after seeing the movie with Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman. What I think it might be important to understand is that there is little in common between the book and movie, other than the title and the basic premise (same for Forrest Gump by Winston Groom). However, I LIKED BOTH A LOT, so, yes, I do recommend Alice Hoffman's book. Enjoy it!

Movie and book good. Book's a much darker and more sinester version - defintely better than the movie. But the movie with Sandra Bullock and Nichole Kidman was nice to watch.
