This is a terrific story placed in two different eras in New York City. It begins with a thrilling account of an accident during the construction of the tunnel to be used by the subway to travel between Manhattan and Brooklyn, jumps forward to a colony of homeless men and women living in the Amtrak tunnel under Riverside Park in the '90's. Ultimately, the two stories join and, in the process we learn a lot about both the culture and work of tunnelers and the lives of those for whom society...
