“Based in at least part on a true story, this semi-biography of Zoli Novatna tells of the end of the old Romani ways. Zoli, our heroine, is a poet whose Grandfather encourages her to learn to read and write and sing. She becomes a link between the old Gypsy ways and the new Western (and then Communist) ways in the 1950's. She is eventually cast out of her caravan and makes her way across numerous borders to the west and then to Italy. Part love story, part history lesson, with some sociology thrown in.”

“Als het zigeunermeisje Zoli zes jaar is, wordt haar familie door Slowaakse fascisten vermoord. Samen met haar grootvader sluit ze zich aan bij een andere stam. Als opgroeiend meisje ontdekt ze haar zangtalent en leert - tegen de zigeunertradities in - lezen en schrijven. Ze noteert haar teksten en schrijft ook gedichten, die door haar Engelse vriend Swann worden gepubliceerd, waarna ze door de zigeuners wordt verstoten. Na de oorlog wordt haar werk door het nieuwe communistische regime 'herontdekt', maar ze merkt al gauw dat ze gebruikt wordt: de communisten willen de zigeuners 'huisvesten' in woontorens. In 2003 bezoekt ze haar dochter in Frankrijk. Tijdens een congres in Parijs loopt het weerzien met Swann op een mislukking uit. Zoli's lotgevallen worden vanuit verschillende perspectieven belicht, o.a. van Zoli zelf, die haar levensverhaal aan haar dochter vertelt. Magistrale, indrukwekkende roman, die een indringend beeld schetst van het leven in de Slowaakse zigeunerkampen en tot nadenken stemt over het lot van culturele minderheden in onze samenleving.

De Ierse auteur Colum McCann beheerst het talent om in de huid van zijn personages te kruipen en de lezer onder te dompelen in de tijd en plaats van zijn romans. Zo ademt zijn nieuwste boek Zoli de sfeer van de jaren dertig in Tsjecho-Slowakije. Zoli Lackowa is een Roma, die, zeer ongebruikelijk in haar familie, leert lezen en schrijven. Zij wordt zangeres, en tegen de Roma-wetten in schrijft zij haar liederen op. De gemeenschap keert zich tegen haar en ook haar minnaar, een Ierse journalist, verraadt haar, omdat hij represailles vreest. Zoli vlucht naar het westen. Haar reis duurt drie jaar. En het zal nog langer duren voor ze haar geliefde terugziet. Zoli is deels gebaseerd op het ware verhaal van de zigeunerdichter Papsuza, die verbannen werd nadat haar gedichten werden gepubliceerd.

“This is an interesting book which traces the female Romany (Gypsy) child Zoli throughout the Czech Republic before and after Communist rule. Against tradition and prohibitions, Zoli learns to read and write and becomes a renowned singer and poet, ultimately receiving the censure/banishment of her clan. (Gypsy customs and restrictions seem similar to that imposed on females under Taliban rule.) Readers who like historic fiction might enjoy this book. ”
