“I really enjoyed "A Study in Scarlet" and "The Sign of Four". If only I happened upon these stories when I was a kid. "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" is lacking a little of the enthusiasm that I found in the first two stories, but I haven't finished it yet, so I'll hold my judgment. Wonderful stories for mystery lovers!”

I enjoy most of the stories as well. There are a few week points among the 60 pieces, but overall it is a great collection. There is humor and compassion the series is not usually credited with. There are ideas about forensic science well ahead of their time. Unfortunately, most people are only familiar with the Adventures, Memoirs, and maybe The Hound of the Baskervilles or A Study in Scarlet. These certainly contain some great stories, but there are some outstanding stories elsewhere in the canon. This will always be a centerpiece of my bookshelf.”

Not only are the stories fun to read but they give a glimpse of the life and times of Victorian England. I read these straight through one summer and have continued to enjoy them. The PBS series with Jeremy Brett is by far and away the best film of the stories. I believe they dramatized all the stories. Brett was the best and most authentic Holmes ever - not Basil Rathbone.”
