“While I normally enjoy Mary Stewart's writing, I found this story to be sub-par compared to her other stories. Her decided use of the third person narrative, distinctly detracted from the story which would have been much better suited to a first-person narrative in the gothic style. I found Jenny to be insipid and downright boring. Stephen as the hero was condescending and cold. Even the location seemed to be lacking promise. ”
