“Erak’s Ransom took place between The Battle for Skandia and The Sorcerer in the North. I mentioned in my review for The Battle for Skandia that I was sad and disappointed that we didn’t get to see the moment Will got his Silver Oakleaf so I’m glad that we got this book to make up for that.
I loved how we got to see Will’s insecurities about completing his training. We got to see a bit of them in The Sorcerer in the North but seeing Will being insecure before being a full-fledged Ranger was something else. I loved how Gilan was the one to reassure him because he used to be Halt’s apprentice as well. The moment when Will thought that he had failed Halt (and his friends) in the desert was heart-breaking.
It was nice to see Erak and Svengal again. I know I said this before but I’ll say it again: I freaking love the Skandians. It was also nice to see Cassandra in her element as the Crowned Princess. She was just awesome.
I’m amazed at Flanagan’s ability to introduce us to new people and land. I really like the desert setting even though I wouldn’t want to ever set foot there. (Being lost in the desert alone is one of my nightmares) The different desert tribes are also very interesting. I appreciate Flanagan’s attention to detail with the desert people’s lifestyle.
The biggest plot twist for me though was the fact that HALT AND LADY PAULINE GOT MARRIED. I still can’t believe it but Halt’s exasperation over the wedding plans did make me laugh. Overall, Erak’s Ransom was a fantastic book. Can’t wait to see what Flanagan has planned for Will and Halt next.

“It's nice that Mr. Flanagan filled the gap he left between books four and five.”

They are forced to travel deep into the depths of the Arradi desert, but will everyone survive?”
