“I used this book as a primary language-learning tool in my self-study for almost 2 years. While I learned some vocabulary and basic grammar from it, it was somewhat of a waste of time ONLY because it is the Romanised version. Any serious student of the Japanese language, whether they're busy or not, will receive far greater benefit from using the Kana version of this text. If your learning style is compatible with memorisation, reading and writing this is a good book-- just be sure to use the Kana version. Additionally, as is the case with any language textbook, I do not recommend relying on this as your ONLY tool. Find yourself so supplementary material that uses other methods of instruction aside from just memorisation.
As an aside, I want to mention that the CD-Rom is quite good and presents dialogues of native speakers speaking naturally.”
