A decade of indecisive jockeying for position at Henry VIII's Court took a decisive turn in the last months of the King's life with the arrest of the Duke of Norfolk and the beheading of his eldest son, the Earl of Surrey; Norfolk had steered the leadership of the conservative faction for more than a decade, and although the King's death saved him from execution, the accession of the boy-King Edward VI left evangelical symphatisers in firm control.
