Maryse Conde is truly a powerful writer. This work is no exception. It is filled with her poetry, magical realism, stream of consciousness, the ornate and the sparse. Her writing is compelling. As a poet, I appreciate how much of her work is imbued with heavy imagery, intricate description and philosophy.
As for the plot itself: beautiful. The reader is in Roselie's head; that is at times the third person narrative is very close, has fixed a very close and intimate lens on Roselie so...
