It's difficult to review a book like this in fewer words than the book itself, so here is my attempt. This is a fantastically-illustrated short book with two simple lessons: things are not always what they seem, and persistence will pay off in the end. Henke teases an amazing amount of depth out of just two colors.

I love Kevin Henkes. This book is one of my favorites. The story is precious and the illustrations express so much emotion. This Caldecott winner is not to be missed! Our 1st grade book club enjoyed this story recently.

    Summary/Review:
This story is about a kitten who thinks that the moon is a bowl of milk and chases after it; once she gets tired of chasing it, she goes home and enjoys a real bowl of milk. The book follows a predictable pattern of the kitten trying to get to the "bowl of milk", not being able to do so, and being determined to get to it. This pattern, along with the simple words used, make it an ideal book for young readers.

    Uses in Classroom:
    - Group reading and story prediction
    - Theme of persistence
    - Analysis of why the kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk

I LOVE this book! An absolute adorable tale of a kitten who simply wants a bowl of milk. Noticing the moon, the kitten mistakenly believes it is the bowl of milk and sets out on a night-time journey to find it.

The illustrations are amazing and fit the story's simplicity.

This story is about a kitten who sees a full moon in the sky and thinks it's a bowl of milk. She tries so hard to capture that "bowl of milk", but just can't get it. She gives up and goes home to find a bowl of milk on the porch for her.

This book would be great to use when teaching verbs. There are so many action words in this story, it's crazy!

This book received the Caldecott award in 2005.

A kitten sees a full moon for the first time and is convinced that it is a bowl of milk. This book won a Caldecott Honor in 2005. The language can be repetitive, but in a good way for very small children. The illustrations are in black and white, but are never boring. Don't be put off by the black and white illustrations, they're really very good and appropriate for the story.
