The hard-boiled detective stories about Philip Marlowe are probably the most classic of mystery noir. Here suddenly we have the American private eye - a hell of a lot different from the British gentleman detective. Tougher, grittier, more violent, more booze, broads and bullets. Shorter sentences. An imperfect hero. And a darker, harsher portrayal of the world we live in - full of sin and crime.

And then we have Marlowe - a man who doesn't get along with the world he lives in...
