I read and loved What Comes After Crazy a long time ago—Sandi Shelton’s second book, A Piece of Normal, is even better. This is a story of loss and change and acceptance of what is, very well told with humor and great insight.

This is one of those books I read when I'm frustrated with literature, one of the beach reading, pink books. It will sit on my shelf next to Jodi Piccoult, Jennifer Weiner, and Sherri McInnis. When someone sees it and says, "what is that book?" surprised to find it in my house, I'll say "Oh,...

I read and loved What Comes After Crazy a long time ago—Sandi Shelton’s second book, A Piece of Normal, is even better. This is a story of loss and change and acceptance of what is, very well told with humor and great insight.

Lily Brown’s parents died tragically in an auto accident 12 years ago and Lily came home from California to take care of her younger sister. Now she and her young son are living in the family home on the Connecticut shore. She’s happily divorced but still managing her ex-husband’s life, going so far as to fix him up with dates. Her biggest regret is that her younger sister, Dana, has not been heard from in ten years. Then one day, out of the blue, Dana shows up and everything changes.

I was completely captivated by this story and could not wait to find out what was going to happen. And of course, then completely sad when the book ended. The characters are fully developed and fleshed out and descriptions of the Connecticut coast are quite real.

Thought this book would be lighter, but was actually a little deep...interesting look at very dysfunctional family that keeps you reading and is full of surprises.

This is one of those books I read when I'm frustrated with literature, one of the beach reading, pink books. It will sit on my shelf next to Jodi Piccoult, Jennifer Weiner, and Sherri McInnis. When someone sees it and says, "what is that book?" surprised to find it in my house, I'll say "Oh, that. It's actually really good." Which it isn't. But it is fun, and sometimes that's enough.

This book tells about Lily Brown, a middle- aged lady who is now divorced and raising her 2 year old son. She tries to set up her ex husband, Teddy so he can get over her. It shows how one womans life can go from happy to complete disater. Her sister who she hasnt spoken to in years shows up and needs her help. I think this book is great. I recommend this book to teens who need a good read.

I enjoyed this book, although admittedly there were times when I wanted to grab Lily and drag her into her life or maybe even push her forward. I have known people like her who take what comes their way and roll along with it. I was glad that by the end of the book I felt like she was finally going to move. Right, wrong, or indifferent, at least she was going to engage and move past existing into living. I enjoyed the read.

This was good, but the resolution (or lack of) at the end was not. Not that I feel it's always necessary to tie things up with a neat little bow, but I felt the main character Lily never got to have her big confrontation with her flakey sister. The sister admitting to being in love with Lily's ex-husband at the end was also a stretch. I would try this author again, though.
